Today's News on IELTS students at Times of India

Those who are applying for a Tier 4 student visa to a Highly Trusted Sponsor (HTS) to study for a bachelor or postgraduate degree are required to meet the English language level set by the institution. All British universities and colleges accept IELTS results. This means students can apply with an IELTS result from any of the 1,000 IELTS test locations worldwide unless their institution has additional requirements.

Latest Update UKVI - IDP

The UK government has announced important changes to language testing for visa applications, reducing the number of tests accepted for visa purposes and bringing in new requirements for the way the tests will be administered. IELTS – the world’s most popular test of English for higher education and global migration – has been approved for all UK visas that require applicants to provide proof of their level of English. This continues the important role which IELTS has long played in language testing for immigration in the UK and other countries, including Australia, Canada and New Zealand. Under the new arrangements, IELTS tests for UK visa applications will be offered throughout the year in more than 100 key locations throughout the world, and a new test – IELTS Life Skills – will be introduced for people who need to prove their speaking and listening skills at level A1 or B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

Nowadays, technological advances and their rapid and wide applications are having a significant impact on a nation’s traditional skills and ways of life. Some argue that such impact is so extraordinary that it would make conventional skills and life styles obsolete. However, I believe they would continue to thrive by providing alternatives to modern ways of life, and innovative ideas for modern technologies. First of all, traditional skills and ways of life are becoming an alternative solution to the problems caused by “mainstreamed” ways of life which are greatly influenced by modern technologies.

Other GRE / MS experiences of Indian applicants

If you are curious about what it may mean to go to the US as an international student, read this article: Life of an Indian student pursuing MS in Computer Science in USA.

Low and Average GRE Score Success Stories

While a high GRE score is always desirable and can get you partial and full scholarships from your dream college, most international applicants will struggle to get there.
But all is not lost if you aren’t exactly a GRE topper. If you can manage your MS applications well, you may be able to cross the hurdle and get an admit from the best universities abroad like Harvard, MIT, Stanford and many others.

GRE versus GMAT

If you are planning to apply to business schools, you might be wondering which entrance exam is better for you – GRE or GMAT? Here’s a post that’ll help you understand the differences between GRE and GMAT.

GRE Preparation

The ETS GRE website offers plenty of free and paid GRE preparation material.

In the paid preparation section, the top on the list is The Official Guide to the GRE® revised General Test, Second Edition.

There are also independent test prep companies that provide GRE prep help. Books and courses offered by Barrons, Kaplan, GREedge, Magoosh and other companies provide an overview of the concepts covered in the GRE syllabus, plenty of practice questions, sample GRE exams (i.e. mock practice tests) too.

GRE Pattern

The GRE is a generalised test that isn’t related to any particular discipline or field. It has been designing to evaluate skills that you’ve already picked up over the years. This allows a wide range of universities to use it to benchmark applicants from diverse backgrounds applying to a big mix of degrees.
If you were to look at the overall GRE exam pattern, it has 3 sections: Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning.

Analytical Writing

This section tests you ability to analyse facts, dissect arguments, judge the presented evidence and put forth your views in the most convincing and structured manner.

GRE Exam fee

The fee to take the GRE is $195. This is cheaper than the $250 fee that you have to pay for GMAT. ETS is also willing to be flexible on the GRE test fee for test takers who can prove their financial hardship.
There are extra charges ($50) if you want to change your center or reschedule the test.

GRE Centers in India

In India the GRE test is conducted (primarily by Prometric and also by other independent teams outside the Prometric network) in the following cities:
Ahmedabad, Allahabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Cochin, Coimbatore, Dehradun, Gandhinagar, Gurgaon, Gwalior, Hyderabad, Indore, Kolkata, Mumbai, Nashik, New Delhi, Nizamabad, Patna, Pune, Trivandrum, Vadodara and Vijawada.

GRE Exam dates in 2015

Unlike the other entrance exam dates in India, there are no specific GRE Exam dates in India. You can take it any time of the year by taking an appointment with the closest GRE exam center. But with this flexibility, there’s another issue.
During the peak application season (generally around August to December), it may be difficult for you to get an appointment in your preferred exam center. You’d be forced to book a day and time at another center that may not be close to where you live.

GRE Exam Eligibility

The only eligibility requirement for GRE is the document required to prove your identity. In India, you’ll need a valid passport. You’ll have to get your original passport (not photocopies) which clearly shows your full name, photograph and signature.
No other documentation (like birth certificate, international driving license etc) can be used as an alternate identity proof. They are very strict about this.

Test Centers and Dates

  • The computer-delivered GRE® revised General Test is offered year-round at Prometric™ test centers, and also on specific dates at additional testing locations outside of the Prometric test center network. Appointments are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • When selecting a test date, make sure your scores will be reported in time for your application deadlines. For computer-delivered tests, scores reports are sent to your designated score recipients approximately 10–15 days after your test date. Please allow time for delivery of scores and processing by the institution.

About the TOEFL and GRE Tests

The TOEFL iBT® test, the most widely accepted academic English-language assessment, is recognised by more than 9,000 institutions in more than 130 countries. The TOEFL iBT test measures an individual’s ability to use and understand English at the university level. The assessment evaluates how well an individual combines the listening, reading, speaking and writing skills needed to perform academic tasks.

Getting to Work in Australia Just Got Easier

Educational Testing Service (ETS) welcomes the Australian Government announcement that the TOEFL iBT® test can be used to demonstrate English-language competence for new skilled migration and post-study applications.
Assistant Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, Senator the Hon. Michaelia Cash, announced the change effective as of November 23.
David Payne, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Global Education for ETS, said the Government's reform will help Australian employers address skill shortages by gaining better and broader access to the global pool of potential employees.
"ETS's 50 years of experience in the Australian market showed us that employers were missing out in the global competition for skills due to disjointed visa English-language proficiency settings," said Mr. Payne. "Skilled migrants were choosing to go elsewhere, like the United States and Canada."
